This college town, home to the University of Georgia, is surrounded by rolling mountains and lush valleys, dotted with lakes and streams. Take a drive on the scenic Georgia Heritage Highway to view antebellum mansions and botanical gardens. The 1,018-acre Watson Mill Bridge State Park has 7 miles of hiking trails, 12 miles of horseback riding trails and 5 miles of mountain biking trails. You can also rent a boat to explore the park's 5-acre pond and try your luck fishing for catfish and bass.

Pine Lake RV Camp

This longstanding, family-owned and operated campground--the closet RV park to Athens--has been open since 1986. The RV sites are tucked under tall pine trees, located around two private ponds. They have full hookups, 30- or 50-amp electrical service and free Wi-Fi. There's a guest laundry and a network of quiet nature trails that crisscross the campground property. Cabin rentals and tent sites are also available. The campground is less than 10 miles from Athens.

Country Boys RV Park

This quiet RV campground, less than 20 miles from Athens, has sites with full hookups with 30- or 50-amp electrical service. All sites have free Wi-Fi and free cable television hookups. There's a swimming pool and guest laundry on the property, along with picnic areas, BBQ grills, a playground, group camping areas and a clubhouse. Several nature trails wind through the RV park. Cabin rentals are also available.

North Shore Resort

This railroad-themed resort, including 23 railroad cars that now house recreation rooms and shops, sits on Lake Oconee, one of the most popular recreational lakes in Georgia. The resort and RV campground, less than 30 minutes from Athens, sits on 55 acres and includes more than 2,000 feet of shoreline. RV sites have full hookups with 30- or 50-amp service. There's plenty to keep campers busy at this full-service resort. The property has a large, 4,000-square-foot clubhouse (with pool tables and a big-screen television), two swimming pools, sports fields (including volleyball, basketball, shuffleboard and horseshoes), miniature golf course, picnic areas, BBQ grills and fire pits. Near the private, sandy beach is a boat launch and docks (rental boats are available). The resort hosts a slew of planned activities and special events throughout the year, including cookouts, dances, fishing contests and more.
