Attractions at Nags Head Beach, North Carolina
There are a number of great hiking trails at Nags Head that expose hikers to the delicate coastal ecosystems of North Carolina. Wildlife, trees, plants and rivers accentuate the entire coastal region situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts at Nags Head beach can enjoy a wide range of area attractions to complete their trip to the beach.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

Located at the northernmost tip of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Bodie Island Lighthouse is a 156-foot tall structure that was built in 1872. Although the lighthouse is not open to climbers, the visitors' center features exhibits and a bookstore. Visitors can take a self-guided tour through the marshes surrounding the lighthouse. The lighthouse, with its black and white bands, has an interesting history that is revealed at the Keeper's Quarters in the visitors center.

NMP Beachcomber Museum and Miss Mattie Midgett's Store

The collection of artifacts at the NMP Beachcomber Museum and Miss Mattie Midgett's Store features items that belonged to Nettie Myrtle Pridgen, the self-proclaimed protector of the beaches at Nags Head from 1935 to 1995. Nettie Pridgen collected beach glass, buttons, shells, driftwood and other paraphernalia that washed up on the shores of Nags Head beach. The museum and store are open at various times throughout the year.

Kitty Hawk Kites

Visit Kitty Hawk Kites on the main road as you enter Nags Head to try your skills at hang-gliding. The store and hang-gliding school is located just across the road from Jockey's Ridge State Park and its huge sand dunes. Kitty Hawk Kites has been providing tourists with hang-gliding lessons and equipment rentals since 1974, and they offer classes for everyone from kids and beginners to advanced and tandem aero-gliding adventurers. Classes are taught every day of the year at Kitty Hawk Kites, which also offers kayak tours, kiteboarding and parasailing classes and captained sailing cruises. Kitty Hawk Kites rents surfboards and segways and offers tubing and water skiing with its fleet of speedboats.
