Bunny Boots
If you are truly worried about cold, it's hard to beat "bunny boots," the nickname given to U.S. Army-issue cold weather boots. Bunny boots, also called Mickey Mouse boots, are a vapor-barrier boot designed for use in Arctic climates. Bunny boots are available at many Army/Navy stores, and come in black and white. Some people don't like bunny boots due to their bulk, but for extended sessions on the ice they are hard to beat. Bunny boots usually cost around $100.
Sorel Caribou
The Sorel Caribou ($110 in 2010) is a ubiquitous pack-boot in production since 1972 that is commonly seen everywhere from frozen lakes to ski resorts. The inner boot has four layers of ThermoPlus insulation and is rated to minus 40 degrees F. The leather uppers and rubber bottoms are waterproof. The liner boot has a fleece collar to help prevent snow from leaking into the boot. The Caribou is easy to use with most snowshoes.
LaCrosse Alpha Ice Kings
The LaCrosse Alpha Ice Kings ($160 in 2010) is a deservedly popular ice-fishing boot. The inner boot has a 4-mm wool felt lined with 800 g of Thinsulate. Additionally, the Radientex lining reflects moisture and heat back like a traditional vapor-barrier boot, increasing the warmth. The tall leather upper is waterproof and helps keep out snow, while the deep tread pattern ensures good traction on frozen surfaces.
