Cherokee, North Carolina, is an outdoor paradise. The only unfortunate thing is that a lot of people know about it, so it can get a little touristy and crowded during the summer months. Even so, the area has all the amenities you could want, as well as great fishing and outstanding mountain trails. Indian reservations, casinos, whitewater rafting and the Great Smokey Mountain National Park are all within a few miles. There are a lot of campgrounds in the area, but reservations are advised, especially during summer months.

Closest to Cherokee

The Flaming Arrow Campground is just 1 mile from Cherokee and within minutes of whitewater rafting on one river and floating or fishing on another. Casinos are nearby and the mountains are, too. Several big RV sites as well as wooded pop-up sites are available at The Flaming Arrow. There are campsites among the trees with full hookups available. Amenities include free wireless Internet and cable TV, and there is a pavilion with picnic tables and laundry facilities.

Ultimate camping, Cherokee KOA

The Cherokee KOA is about 10 miles north of Cherokee and is a full-service camping resort. You might never leave the campsite. There is a river on one side, and stocked trout ponds on the other. There is an area for fly-fishing as well. There are plenty of trails nearby as well as the Great Smoky Mountains. The campground offers programs for the entire family. The KOA offers full hookups for RVs as well as popups. Lodges and cabins are available. For a roughing-it experience, there are tepees available. There is a shuttle to area attractions and many activities to participate in during your stay.

Off the beaten path, Holly Cove

Holly Cove RV and Cabin Rentals, about 10 miles south of Cherokee, is just enough off the beaten path to truly feel relaxed even with all the activities that are available nearby. There are 55 large RV spaces with full hookups, as well as a lot of popup and tent sites available. There are also nice cabins. This is a family oriented campground. There are potluck dinners as well as a screened-in pavilion for group activities. There are lots of activities scheduled in the summer months. You can also make reservations for whitewater rafting and train rides at the campground.
Even though it is a bit out of the way, it is still close to all the attractions such as casinos, music and restaurants. Holly Cove has free wireless Internet and satellite TV.
