Williams Cycling Wheel System 38
At $999 as of 2010, Williams Cycling Wheel System 38 effectively combines performance and durability. Weighing less than 3 pounds, the Wheel System 38 performs like a much pricier wheel. James Huang, Bikeradar.com's technical editor reported that the Wheel System 38 provided "a fast spin-up thanks to the low weight and buttery ride quality courtesy of the carbon rims." The Wheel System 38 even performed well off the pavement, too. Huang noted that during a cyclocross ride, "the cushy feel made it slightly easier to stay in the saddle and power through rough sections."
Easton EC 90 SL
Regarded as Bicycling.com's Gear of the Day in December of 2009, the EC 90 SL wheelset ($1,800 as of 2010) is a lightweight option for cyclocross riders. At 2.75 pounds, the EC 90 SL's won't weigh a rider down, but they don't scrimp when it comes to durability. Bicycling.com's editorial reviewer noted that during a race, he experienced "an undeniable extra jump as I sped up." Also, despite cyclocross racing's notably rough demeanor, Bicycling's reviewer noted that "through crashes and over tree roots, rocks and bumpy terrain, the EC90SLs held up like a champ" over a rough season of racing.
Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate
Mavic's Cosmic Carbone Ultimate ($1,200 as of 2010) weighs less than 3 lbs. CompetitiveCycling.com said it could possibly be the last wheel you'll ever have to buy. Hailed in the review as "crazy light," the wheels were found to handle pavement, dirt, gravel and cobblestones with equal aplomb. The reviewers also noted that the Cosmic Carbone Ultimates provided exceptional power output on hills, that "the extra distance was kind of breathtaking."
