Nestled among the mountains of the Mogollon Rim between the Sierra Ancha and the Mazatzal Mountain ranges, Payson, Arizona, is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Cross-country skiing, hunting, hiking, biking and fishing are examples of activities Payson visitors and residents enjoy. The town is surrounded by Tonto National Forest--embracing almost 3 million acres of rugged country ranging from cactus-studded desert to pine-forested mountains. And just minutes away from Payson are several rim lakes and trout streams, as well as miles of mountain biking, hiking and horse trails.

Ponderosa Campground

Situated in the heart of Tonto National Forest, Ponderosa Campground is located 12 miles northeast of Payson. Tonto National Forest features nearly 900 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails. The Forest is also home to many lakes and creeks, where fishing and boating opportunities abound.

Ponderosa Campground has 61 tent and RV camping sites, all equipped with picnic tables and grills. The campground features drinking water, vault toilets, dump station, amphitheater, fire rings and Abert Trail--a natural trail that loops around the perimeter of the campground and provides an easy self-guided hiking trail. The campground is open April through October.

Payson Campground and RV Resort

Nestled among pine trees in the heart of Payson, Payson Campground and RV Resort provides its campers with a convenient location to explore all of Payson's attractions. Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, Tonto Fish Hatchery and seven lakes are all within a 30-mile radius of the campground, providing many wildlife viewing, biking, hiking, fishing, boating and water sports opportunities. The resort also provides easy access to three golf courses within 3 miles of the campground.

Payson Campground has 80 tent and RV sites, many of which are equipped with water, sewer and electric hookups. The campground is open year-round and features a clubhouse with a TV, computer and pool table, heated seasonal swimming pool with sun deck, restrooms with hot showers, laundry facility, playground, basketball court, horseshoe pits, RV dump station and free wireless Internet access. The campground welcomes pets on a leash for no additional charge.

Desert Lakes Resort

Occupying 7 1/2f acres in Tonto Basin, Arizona, Desert Lakes Resort is less then 20 miles away from Payson. Surrounded by Tonto National Forest, the resort provides its campers with easy access to many outdoor recreation activities, such as hiking, biking, hunting, four-wheeling, boating and fishing. Roosevelt Lake as well as Apache Lake are both within a 20-minute drive from the park.

Desert Lakes Resort has 64 RV sites with electricity, water and sewer hookups, as well as concrete slabs. The resort features a laundry facility and is next door to Butcher Hook Complex, which features a bar, restaurant, gas station and bait shop. The resort is an adult community that welcomes children for limited visits only. Daily, weekly and yearly rates are available.
