Campgrounds Near Akeley, Minnesota
Located in north-central Minnesota, in the state's scenic lake country, is the town of Akeley. Once a large lumber town, the city is home to the Paul Bunyan Historical Museum. Surrounded by the Paul Bunyan State Forest, Chippewa National Forest and numerous lakes, the area offers an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. Visitors to the area will find various campsites to choose from, with some situated directly in the forest or on the water.

Moore Spring Resort

Situated directly on Howard Lake in the Chippewa National Forest is the Moore Spring Resort. The resort is located approximately 10 miles from Akeley. Campsites are located in a heavily wooded area and visitors can choose between wooded or lakeside sites. Sites offer water, electric, fire rings and a grill. Some sites will accommodate larger RVs and others are wooded and private for tents. Lakeside sites have their own dock for visitors' boats and fishing. The park offers bathrooms, playground and lake swimming. Anglers will appreciate the park's floating dock, boat ramp and opportunities to fish Lake Howard. The national forest surrounding the park offers numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Gulch Lake Campground and Day Use Area

The Gulch Lake Campground & Day Use Area is in the northern section of the Paul Bunyan State Forest. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources operates this campground, which is located in a wildlife refuge. This heavily forested campground offers eight private and secluded primitive campsites. Each campsite has a cleared area for camping, a picnic table and fire ring. Sites are on a first come-first serve basis. The campground has a picnic area, vault toilets and drinking water. The day use area adjacent to the campground, offers a boat ramp for non-motorized vessels. Anglers can fish from Gulch Lake or nearby Lake 21, Nelson and Bass Lakes. The campground is an access point to numerous area forest trails. The campground is located approximately 18 miles from Akeley.

Akeley City Park & Campground

The city-operated Akeley City Park is on 11th Crow Wing Lake, just outside the city limits. The park offers seasonal camping from May through September. There are 24 lakeside sites which offer water and 30-amp service. There are also 13 water-only sites located in a private, grassy area away from the RVs. The park has a dump station, swimming beach, sheltered picnic area, bathrooms, showers and playground. Anglers, boaters and canoeists will appreciate the park's boat ramp and fishing pier. Canoeists can canoe the Crow Wing River, which flows through the chain of Crow Wing Lakes and is considered to be one of the state's best wilderness canoe routes. The 49-mile Heartland Trail runs through the park, offering opportunities to hike, bike, or snowmobile. The park is adjacent to the Paul Bunyan State Forest.
