Chattanooga, Tennessee, Campgrounds

Situated on the banks of the Tennessee River deep in the Appalachian Mountains, Chattanooga is surrounded by outdoor attractions. The Civil War battlefields of Lookout Mountain and Chickamauga offer hiking trails, as does the Prentice-Cooper State Forest. There are also lakes and creeks in the area offering boating and fishing. Campers in the Chattanooga area will find they are spoiled for choice when it comes to both their camping and activity options.

Raccoon Mountain Caverns and Campground

About five miles west of downtown Chattanooga, the campground is centered on the extensive cave system at Raccoon Mountain. With 5 1/2 miles of mapped tunnels and more passages that remain unexplored, Raccoon Mountain Caverns offers tours for novices and expeditions for hardened cavers. The campground has mixed RV and tent sites and is open all year around. The facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, a playground, a game room, hiking trails, go-karts, a basketball court, a dump station, a bathhouse and a coin laundry.

Harrison Bay State Park

Harrison Bay State Park is centered on a lake formed by a Tennessee Valley Authority dam, upriver from Chattanooga. There are 21 tent camping sites at the park, and the camping facilities include a dumping station and bathhouse. The park also accommodates RVs. The park itself has a 4.5-mile biking loop, three hiking trails, a boat ramp, lake fishing, and an outdoor swimming pool.

Lookout Mountain-Chattanooga West KOA

The Lookout Mountain KOA is a 37-acre property in the shadow of Lookout Mountain. Like KOAs everywhere, it offers a mix of tent and RV sites, as well as rental cabins. Camping sites come with picnic tables and fire rings. The KOA is pet-friendly and even has an obstacle course for dogs. The features and facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, firewood sales and miles of hiking trails.

Possum Creek RV Park

Possum Creek is primarily an RV park, but it does have nine camping sites set aside for tent campers. Set on its namesake creek, the wooded campground has a swimming beach, bathhouse, dump station and boat ramp.
