For the RV camper, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, offers a good location near a number of outdoor attractions. Rendezvous Mountain State Park and the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir are only about 6 miles from the center of town. Stone Mountain State Park and the Thurmond Chatham Wildlife Management area are 12 miles to the north, and more outdoor destinations are only a little farther away. The area offers fishing, boating and hiking, among other outdoor activities. Best off all, after the camping trip is over, easy access to U.S. 421 and then to Interstate 77 offers an easy drive home.

VFW Campground

Operated by a local post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, this campground offers 42 sites with full hookups and 12 with just water and electricity. There is also a 15-acre pitch for tent campers. The facilities include a shower house and a baseball field. Breakfast is served on the campground from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir

The W. Kerr Scott Dam is situated a little under 6 miles from North Wilkesboro, and its recreation area has three campgrounds. All three campgrounds have both tent and RV sites, as well as their own separate swimming areas, boat ramps, playgrounds and dump stations. However, only the campgrounds at Bandit's Roost and Warrior Creek have bath houses. The campground at Fort Hamby does not.

Raccoon Holler Campground

Raccoon Holler is about 20 miles to the northwest of North Wilkesboro. This wooded campground has 150 RV sites with full hookups and 35 sites with just water and electrical hookups. Campground facilities include bath houses, a dump station, a playground, a game room and a coin laundry. There is also a camp store that sells LP gas, as well as courts for softball and horseshoes. The 80-acre property has its own hiking trails and a 5-acre lake stocked with fish.

Hiddenite Family Campground

Situated on the South Yadkin River, roughly 20 miles to the southeast of North Wilkesboro. There are 37 RV pullthrough sites with full hookups and up to 50-amp electricity, as well as tent sites on a wooded property of more than 30 acres. Facilities include a shower house, playground, outdoor swimming pool, dump station, picnic tables, fire rings and courts for volleyball and horseshoes. The campground is pet-friendly, and small farm animals are kept on the property.
