The nearly 4,000-acre Lake Holcombe, in the northwoods of Wisconsin (about 50 miles from Eau Claire) is a mecca for outdoor lovers. The lake is a popular destination for anglers fishing for northern pike, musky, walleye and bass. Boat rentals and guided game fishing excursions are plentiful. Hiking, horseback riding, and biking on the Old Abe multi-use trail as well as an extensive network of snowmobiling trails, including the Tuscobia Trail, are nearby.

Paradise Shores Resort Hotel

Set on the shores of Lake Holcombe, this all-season resort property has direct lake access, with boat tie-ups and fishing docks. There's a hot tub, pool and sauna on-site, as well as a full-service bar and restaurant. A variety of accommodations include pine-paneled cottages with full kitchens and separate living and dining areas, suites with kitchenettes, and double rooms with small sitting areas. There's also a larger apartment for rent. Most accommodations have water views and are just steps away from the shoreline. Boat rentals and fishing excursions are nearby, along with winter ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Pine Drive Cabins

This economical resort welcomes guests who come by water or land. There are four two-bedroom lakeside cabins to rent, each with a fully equipped kitchen, cable TV, microwave, patio and BBQ grill, gas fireplace and private dock. The property also offers a three-bedroom home and an historic log cabin, with a fieldstone fireplace, for rent. Next door is the Pine Drive Bar and Grill, with a lakeside tiki bar. The cabins, open year-round, are two miles from the center of Holcombe and one mile from public beaches.

Flater's Flambeau Point Resort

Flater's Flambeau Point Resort is perched on a wooded point at the headwaters of Lake Holcombe, where the Flambeau and Chippewa rivers empty into the lake. There are five cabins tucked into the woods, overlooking the water. Three cabins have two bedrooms and the other two cabins each have three bedrooms. All have full kitchens and private baths. There are sports fields, a swimming beach, playground, and a bar on-site, as well as boat rentals, deep-freeze services and a fish-cleaning house. The resort offers four guided river trips, including scenic canoe trips and game fishing excursions. Resort guests have direct access to hiking, biking and snowmobiling trails.
