Rococo German Bakery
Although it's sweets-only, this bakery---owned by two German brothers who also man the helms---is your closest-to-Summerville option for German eats. The place turns out wedding cakes in elaborate, multi-tiered designs, specialty cakes (think sports cakes and birthday cakes), and everyday cakes in flavors like Almond Joy, Black Forest, and German Chocolate. You can also catch them and their toothsome creations at the Summerville Farmers Market, every Saturday from April through October.

Gene's Hofbrau
This casual bar and eatery--located 25 miles from Summerville, just inside West Ashley--has been dishing up its hearty vittles since 1952, earning itself the title of Charleston's oldest bar. The lengthy menu touts typical pub fare like burgers and sandwiches, but a section dedicated to German dishes like chicken fricassee and pork loin, should give you your fill. With 150-plus brews on draft, this spot also boasts the largest beer selection in town. And if the libations aren't enough to keep you occupied, you can try your hand at shuffleboard, darts, Connect Four, Yahtzee, checkers or chess.

Horst Gasthaus
If you'll traverse any distance for your schnitzel, road trip 115 miles north up the coast to this festive joint, where the menu is packed with German, Austrian and Swiss fare. Nosh specialties like bratwurst, knackwurst, spaetzel and schnitzel. Or spring for the popular all-you-can-eat pork chops. A jumbo slice of--what else?--German Chocolate Cake makes for a sweet ending. Owners say it's Oktoberfest all year long here, where the staff dons dirndl dresses and lederhosen and live accordion tunes fill the air as diners prost with jumbo steins of Deutch brews.
