The Best Trolling Rod Holders

The Best Trolling Rod Holders
Trolling is an effective method of fishing since it allows anglers to set lures or baits at precise depths while covering miles of open water in a search for actively feeding fish. A critical piece of any trolling system is the kind of rod holders used to keep trolling rods secure when that fish of a lifetime strikes. Read on for information concerning the top trolling rod holders on the market today.

Attwood Stainless Steel Rod Holders

Crafted from stainless steel, these rod holders from Attwood are made to last. The rod holder tube is lined with plastic, so the trolling rods are not damaged during rough seas or as the rods are inserted into and removed the holder, again under rough conditions. This particular style of rod holder is designed to be mounted on either a 7/8- or 1-inch rail. This allows the angler to use the rod holders in either a vertical or horizontal fashion, depending on the rail configuration and boat setup. Once the rod holder is mounted on the rail, you can adjust the rod holder's angle, which is preferred when using multiple rods to avoid tangled lines.

The 2010 suggested pricing is $54.99

Big Jon Multi-Set Rod Holder

Produced from thick-walled aluminum tubing, the Multi-Set Rod Holder from Big Jon Sports is built to stand up to the rigors of big-game fishing. The machined base on the rod holder allows for it to be positively set in one of nine different positions using just one hand. A spring-loaded steel pin locks into pre-drilled holes in the base so the holder will not drift from its position once locked in. This allows anglers to position their trolling rods at the most opportune angle needed to keep lines from tangling in the water. A protective vinyl cap on the top of the rod holder protects the trolling rods from being damaged during the heat of battle.

A suggested 2010 price is $63.86

Down East Rod Holders

With their all-metal construction, there is no weak plastic link to fail on the Down East rod holders. These simple rod holders offer a uniqe advantage in that any style of fishing rod, including fly rods, can be used with them. To use the Down East rod holder, simply lift up on the tubular portion of the holder. This will cause the rod holder to "open," allowing the angler to insert the trolling rod. Lower the tube back into the base and the rod holder is locked into position. When a fish strikes, just pull up on the trolling rod to release the Down East rod holder and you are ready to do battle.

Down East rod holders are available in a variety of mounting configurations from clamp-on to bolt-on models; 2010 suggested pricing for the bolt-on model is $30.00
