The Best Triathlon Biking Shoes

The Best Triathlon Biking Shoes
Cycling shoes have a big responsibility---they have to transfer power effectively and provide comfort on long rides while being as lightweight as possible. Triathlon shoes have to do all of this, with the added complexities of doing so after competitors swim and before they run. Good triathlon shoes have to be effective cycling shoes with exceptional drying power, a speedy entry and comfort.

Lake CX410 CFC

The name is a mouthful, but the Lake CX410 CFC (around $400 in 2010) is worth a mention. With a Custom Formed Carbon (CFC) fiber outsole, the CX410 provides solid power transfer with minimal added weight and is heat moldable for a custom fit. Mesh vents and drain areas keep feet dry, and an anti-microbiobial interior keep shoes stink-free despite their sockless usage. The "Best Damn Whatever" columnist on trigearreveiw.com called the CX410s "the best tri shoes" he's ever used, citing their weight (235 g) and airflow.

Shimano SH-TR70

Lightweight and solid, Shimano's SH-TR70 (usually under $400) is a comfortable, breathable and supportive triathlon shoe. It's heat-moldable, so wearers get a custom fit with every pair. Its carbon fiber sole is lightweight and rigid for effective power transfer from foot to pedal. Honeycomb venting dries feet after the swim and keeps them dry on the bike ride, and a huge entry strap makes for a quick transition. Cid Cardoso Jr, a 20-year triathlete and owner of Inside Out Sports in North Carolina, wrote at endurancemag.com that the SH-TR70 is "the most comfortable shoe I've ridden to date," saying this shoe takes comfort and fit to another level.

Sidi T-2.6 Carbon

The Sidi T-2.6 Carbon has all of the makings of a solid triathlon shoe. From its svelte 280 g to its carbon sole for effective power transfer, the T-2.6 is made for speed as well as comfort. A tongueless design and a heel loop both help triathletes achieve a quick transition. Opposing toe straps allow riders to secure their shoes while pedaling. The review of the T-2.6 on bicycling.com indicates that the comfortable brushed interior eliminates the need for socks, even on 100-mile rides.
