Nicknamed "the Switzerland of the Orient," the small town of Suwa in Japan's Nagano Prefecture is nestled in the towering Japanese Alps. Sought after by adventurers for its snow-crowned mountains and expansive lakes,its trails for biking and hiking, and its pro-skiing and snowboarding routes, Suwa is a prime destination in Japan for adventurers. Suwa, and the surrounding towns, are loaded with bubbling hot springs, Japanese bathhouses, mountain vistas and cherry blossom splendor in the spring. Hotels inspired by Suwa's natural scenery dot the landscape, showing off the famous Suwa where giant swan boats glide from side to side.

Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu

Founded in 1896, this Matsumoto Hotel keeps an old-fashioned style and ambiance. Furnished with classic Matsumoto furniture, the hotel's wooden interior, high ceilings and wood beams keep it time-honored while a few aesthetic touches add modernity to the Japanese-style bedrooms. The Matsumoto offers single, twin and Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats and offers a special price package for foreigners only. The hotel's large communal bath is open to guests 24 hours a day at a low price and the in-hotel café serves traditional dishes. The hotel is central, just a 15-minute walk from the Matsumoto train station and three minutes to the Matsumoto Castle. Head up one of the many mountain trails for a day hike---Kirigamine Kogen, connecting Mount Cyochomiyama with Mount Washigamine and including Mt. Kuruma as its highest point, begs to be hiked. Local nikkokisuge flowers bloom there in July. The rolling meadows and scattered lakes inspire the outdoor traveler. Tokyu Inn Matsumoto

A modern, 11-story, 98-room hotel in central Suwa, the Tokyu Inn offers guests a traditional stay in Suwa marked by more lavish modern amenities.
