The beautiful and mysterious state of Alaska is a vast collection of ocean coasts, rushing rivers and green forests, perfect for the outdoor enthusiast looking for challenging adventures. With an area of 586,412 miles, roughly two and a half times the size of Texas, Alaska is well known for pleasing its visitors with plenty of water and snow sports, hiking and jaw-dropping scenery.

Alaska Adventure is a family-owned tour company that offers several packages with an array of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and canoeing. Groups are small, and itineraries vary from five to 16 days. Areas visited include Canada's Yukon Territory, the Arctic and several national parks.

One example of an adventure package is their 10-day "Alaska Wild Multi-Sport Adventure" which travels throughout the Anchorage region up to Fairbanks. Tour highlights include hiking in Denali and Wrangell-St. Elias National Parks, glacier hiking with crampons on the Matanuska glacier, river rafting on the Kenai Penisula and camping on the bluffs above the Copper River. Packages are all-inclusive and rates as of January 2010 were $3,225 per person for dates from June 11 through August 26.

Alaska Outdoors

Alaska Outdoors has been operating for 20 years and was awarded one of the best travel adventure companies worldwide by National Geographic for two years in a row. Their packages run from seven to 21 days and there are nine itineraries to chose from, or you can customize your own. There are also combination tours that allow you to sample all of the areas and remote corners available in the time frame.

One example is the Alaskan Arctic Tour for seven days, which features the Yukon River, the Arctic Circle, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Arctic Ocean. If you are more adventurous, you can select the 14-day package, which combines two of the available tours. You'll enjoy a full array of outdoor sports including kayaking, ice climbing, canoeing, river rafting and hiking. Rates as of January 2010 started at $1,095 to $3,545 per person, with tours leaving from late May until mid-August.

Arctic Wild

Arctic Wild offers tours on the northern coast of the state. They offer one- to three-week packages, including custom-made tours. The areas available for touring include starting in the Western Arctic Ocean, down south to the Gates of the Arctic National Park and up northeast to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. There are plenty of outdoor sports available such as canoeing, backpacking and rafting, and each are worked into a different theme of the tour. Rates as of January 2010 began at $2,700 for backpacking tours to $4,000 and up for some canoeing and rafting trips.
