Bay St. Louis is a quaint community of about 7,500 on Mississippi's Gulf Coast. Explore Mississippi's lush forestland and coastline from one of the area's many hiking and biking trails, or take the three-mile beachfront walking and bike path along the Gulf of Mexico and over the Bay St. Louis Bridge. Enjoy year-round canoeing and kayaking, and soak up the Southern sun on the beach. And for some Southern cooking, be sure to sample some of the local cuisine.

The Sycamore House

This restaurant is located in a historic nineteenth century cottage-style building with a long history in Bay St. Louis. The Sycamore serves sandwiches, burgers, salads, New York-style pizza and entrees like pork loin, steak, pan-seared scallops and trout almondine. The dessert menu has savory treats like the crème brulee, brandied cherry brownie and chocolate torte. There's an extensive wine and specialty coffee list. Catch the Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with dishes like crabmeat omelets and eggs Benedict. The Sycamore is open for lunch Thursday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for dinner Wednesday through Saturday 5 to 9:30 p.m. No need to dress up, but don't come straight from the trails.

Rickey's Bar & Grill

With its quirky, under-the-sea decor, Rickey's is a fun place to grab some casual fare. Rickey's has some New Orleans-inspired meals like po-boys, Mardi-Gras pasta and gumbo. Taste fresh seafood straight from the Gulf, like fried oysters, catfish and crawfish. Main entrees include eggplant lasagna, steaks, chicken and veal. Rickey's has appetizers like fried artichokes, calamari, BBQ shrimp and even frog legs. There's a kids' menu (10 and under), plus soups and salads. Most of the appetizers are under $10; seafood platters range from $11.95 to 23.95; steaks and entrees are between $16.95 and $24.95; and there are plenty of sandwiches, salads and burgers for under $10. Dress is casual.

Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits

A popular Southern chain restaurant, Popeye's offers slow-cooked, Louisiana-style fried chicken and scrumptious fresh-baked biscuits. Order your chicken spicy or mild with sides like mashed potatoes with Cajun gravy, red beans and rice, Cole slaw and Cajun-battered fries. Popeye's also has chicken sandwiches, bowls and nuggets, plus popcorn shrimp and catfish. Prices are reasonable, and you can save even more with their combo and family meals. Dine-in or take out.
