With its historic section that includes 22 park-like squares, Savannah is truly a city that is best experienced by walking. Known as America's most haunted city, Savannah also offers a variety of walking ghost tours. And if walking through the city proper is not enough, there are plenty of opportunities for more serious hiking just outside the city, such as at the Skidaway Island State Park or the Savannah Nation Wildlife Refuge. After exploring the Savannah area on foot, stay at one of several hotels that overlook River Street, which is popular a gathering place and attraction for tourists and locals alike.

The Bohemian Savannah Riverfront

Sporting a rooftop lounge overlooking the Savannah River, the Bohemian is a luxury hotel featuring 75 rooms and suites, each with a view of either the river or Savannah's historic district. The decor is contemporary with vintage touches, including finely carved woodwork and antique fixtures. Comfort appointments include plush bathrobes and slippers, sofas and beds with pillow-top mattresses in each room. The hotel offers concierge, valet and room services as well as a fitness center. Small pets are allowed for an additional fee. The Bohemian offers two casual restaurants. Rocks on the River features contemporary Southern dishes such as hamburgers, steak and seafood, and it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Rocks on the Roof serves tapas-style fare for lunch and dinner but is best known for its extensive bar selections and live entertainment.

Savannah River Inn

An affordable yet comfortable lodging alternative, the Savannah River Inn offers 54 rooms in a pet-friendly facility. You can choose from smoking or non-smoking rooms with either a king bed or double beds. The hotel offers a pool as well as a picnic facility that includes grills for guest use. Although there is no restaurant in the hotel itself, it is located within walking distance of many fine and casual eating establishments in historic Savannah as well as on River Street.

The Mulberry Inn

The Mulberry Inn boasts a rich history, which includes its start as a cotton warehouse and livery stable in the 1860s. At one point in the early 1900s, the building was the site of the country's second Coca-Cola bottling facility. Now a Holiday Inn property, the Mulberry Inn is a 145-room hotel with full amenities, including concierge service, pool and fitness center. Each afternoon between 4 and 6 p.m., the hotel offers an afternoon tea in the main area, with complimentary desserts and coffee and entertainment by a live pianist. The Courtyard Cafe offers breakfast, lunch and Sunday brunch, while the hotel's lounge, Sergeant Jasper's, is open at 4 p.m. every day and stays open until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight Friday and Saturday.

River Street Inn

Built in 1817, the building that currently houses the River Street Inn has a long history as cotton warehouse. Spanning an entire block and overlooking River Street and the Savannah River, this 86-room hotel offers luxury room appointments such as hardwood floors, brass fixtures and Oriental rugs. Amenities include a fitness center, morning newspaper delivery and turn-down service that includes homemade chocolates. Each afternoon from 5 until 7 p.m., excluding Sundays, the hotel offers complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres. The hotel is served by three on-site restaurants. Bernie's River Street Restaurant and Bar offers casual fare in a relaxed atmosphere, Huey's Southern Cafe features New Orleans cuisine, while Tubby's offers live music and fresh seafood.
