Spanish Restaurants in El Barrio, NYC

Spanish Restaurants in El Barrio, NYC
Just a thirty minute subway ride from downtown Manhattan, New York, sits El Barrio. Commonly known as Spanish Harlem, El Barrio, is home to a plethora of Spanish and Latin immigrants and cultures. The El Barrio district stretches from the East River to Fifth Avenue and from 96th Street to 116th Street. The area is home to New York City's only museum featuring Hispanic art, El Museo del Barrio. Enjoy the northern reaches of Central Park and plan a day of biking, walking, roller-blading or a trip to the Central Park Zoo. The numerous restaurants featuring authentic Spanish/Latin fare will be sure to satisfy your hunger upon your return.

Camaradas El Barrio

Camaradas El Barrio features inexpensive Latin food with a Caribbean flair. The atmosphere is hip and friendly and hot salsa music can invariably be heard from outside. The restaurant is known for its wide offering of both bottled and draft beers, including Brahma from Brazil, Chimay from Belgium and Aguila from Colombia, as well as its excellent bar food, including churrasco skirt steak, Cuban sandwiches and Mofongo with red peppers. The restaurant offers a Happy Hour with all-you-can-drink Sangria weekdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is open for dinner daily.

La Fonda Boricua

You'll be reminded of your Puerto Rican grandmother's cooking once you step foot in La Fonda Boricua. The restaurant is decorated with uplifting Puerto Rican art, and the food is a soulful version of Puerto Rican cuisine. Their menu includes garlicky Mofongo packed with plantain and fried pork; sweet Maduros, a plantain side dish; and crispy, fried pork chops. A favorite with the local community, the food at La Fonda Boricua is delicious and very reasonably priced. The Fonda Boricua lounge, located directly across the street, features live Latin Jazz music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner.

Amor Cubano

Amor Cubano offers Latin cuisine in an upscale environment. The local favorite is known for its fun, modern bar area, which serves some of El Barrio's best mojitos, and live music, courtesy of a three-piece band that plays standard Cuban classics on the weekends. If you are looking for a quieter place to dine, head to the back room where the music is much more subdued and the quirky décor resembles an outdoor brick patio, complete with outdoor furniture and faux laundry hanging on clotheslines. Try the guest favorites, including the Tostones Rellenos, stuffed plantain tapas or the Vaca Frita--flank steak with lime and orange juice. Amor Cubano, which is open for lunch and dinner daily, is also a popular destination for Sunday brunch, serving unlimited sangria and mimosas.
