Ski Resorts Near Denver, Colorado
Colorado is home to a great array of ski resorts that are tucked away deep in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. These resorts all offer amazing vistas of wintry mountain peaks, great terrain for beginners to expert skiers, lessons for kids and adults, and a variety of lodging and dining options. The biggest challenge is deciding which resort to visit.

Eldora Mountain Resort

Eldora Mountain Resort is the closest ski area to Denver, Colorado, located just 35 miles northwest of Denver and about 21 miles west of Boulder. Eldora is a relatively small ski area with 680 acres of skiable terrain, when compared with the other big mountain resorts of Colorado. Known as a local's ski area rather than a destination resort, Eldora's 12 lifts service a terrain park and east, intermediate and expert terrain. As of 2010, lift ticket prices for Eldora are among the cheapest in Colorado.

Loveland Ski Area

Loveland Ski Resort is located 53 miles west of Denver right off of Interstate 70. Situated right on the Continental Divide and with lift-service to 12,700 feet, Loveland ski area is one of the highest in Colorado. Because of the resort's high elevation, it is typically one for the first ski areas to open in North America and boasts an average snowfall of over 400 inches. Loveland's 1,570 acres of skiable terrain are primarily intermediate and advanced runs although 13 percent of the slopes are for beginners.

Arapahoe Basin Ski and Snowboard Area

Arapahoe Basin, known simply as A-Basin, is either a 68- or 96-mile drive from Denver Colorado depending on whether Loveland Pass is open. A-Basin is considered the highest ski area in Colorado and is located on the other side of Loveland Ski Resort. A-Basin offers some of the most challenging terrain near Denver with 60 percent of the mountain dedicated to moguls, steep faces, and bowls. A-Basin also has runs for beginner and intermediate skiers and has a decent family atmosphere with a variety of lesson packages.

Winter Park Ski Resort

Located 67 miles northwest of Denver, Colorado, Winter Park Ski Resort is the considered the closest major ski resort destination to Denver. With more than 3000 acres of easy groomers, intermediate tree runs and challenging bowls, Winter Park has plenty of terrain for the beginner to expert. One of Colorado's largest resorts, the ski runs at Winter Park are spread across five mountains. Stick to the groomers on Winter Park Mountain if skiers are new to skiing or for advanced skiers, they can explore Mary Jane Mountain with its famous bumps and tree skiing. Winter Park is a premier ski destination with full-service restaurants, luxurious accommodations, shops and spas located right within the resort.
