Sitting between Absecon Bay and the Atlantic City Reservoir, Absecon, N.J., offers visitors access to some interesting outdoor areas to explore. With the waters and islands of the bay, Absecon is home to the Forsythe National Wildlife Reserve as well as the Absecon State Wildlife Area. These spots, along with the beach of the Jersey Shore, are popular among walkers, hikers and birdwatchers. The Absecon area has many restaurants to choose from, including some locally owned Greek restaurants for those craving Mediterranean cuisine.

Athenian Garden‎

The Athenian Garden Restaurant sits inside a converted home in Galloway, just 6 miles from Abescon. The former home makes for a cozy environment, as it is decorated with mementos and Greek decor from the restaurant family's owners. The menu is full of authentic Greek cuisine, which goes beyond gyros and lamb. The Athenian Garden offers stifado, rabbit stew and the appetizer melitzanosalata, which is a dip made up of eggplant. Another specialty on the menu is ravlaki, a filet of bass, served with golden raisins and garlic mashed potatoes.

Just 10 miles from Abescon, Gyromania‎ is a storefront fast-food restaurant that focuses on gyros, traditional Greek sandwiches with sliced lamb or chicken, tomatoes and cucumber sauce. Patrons can get a choice of meat in their gyro as well as how much they want it. They can also get a plate of gyro meat with a side of fries or a salad. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very much focused on takeout, with a front counter for orders and a few booths.

Yiasou It's Greek‎

Yiasou It's Greek‎ is a storefront, family-owned Greek restaurant in Pomona, which is about 6 miles from Absecon. Its atmosphere is small and cozy, decorated in bright white and blue, the national colors of Greece. The menu is stocked with traditional Greek fare, including hummus, gyros and fried calamari. However, the restaurant also offers some specialty items, including spanakopita, a Greek spinach pie made in a pastry crust with onions and feta cheese. Yiasou also has spicy Greek meatballs as well as shish kebob dishes served with Greek rice.
