Located just 7 miles from the edge of the Monongahela National Forest in the Allegheny Mountains, Beverly, West Va., is a small town that dates back to the Revolutionary War. Just south of the quaint city of Elkins, which is known as the "gateway" to the Monongahela, cabins in Beverly and the surrounding area offer a perfect base camp for visitors to take in the beautiful mountain scenery and enjoy outdoor activities. Skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, bird watching, canoeing, swimming, hunting and fishing are all popular and plentiful in the region. Hikers will revel in the Monongahela's 825 miles of trails found throughout its 900,000 acres.

Glady Fork Cabins

The Glady Fork Cabins near Beverly, West Va., are in a fairly remote area within the Monongahela National Forest, along the Glady Fork River. Wildlife is plentiful, and stocked trout streams are nearby. There are areas for mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. Six cabins on this property are situated so as not to be within sight of each other. Prices range from $96 to $175 a night on weekdays to $120 to 200 on weekends (as of January 2010). One pet is allowed for a $50 fee.

Appalachian Cabins

Combining rustic charm with modern day conveniences, the Appalachian Cabins were cut and assembled in the same way early settlers of the area built their homes. The timber is from nearby Spruce Mountain. There is easy access behind the cabins to a branch of the Potomac River, offering some of the best fishing and canoeing waters in the area. Just 3 miles away are Seneca Rocks, known for challenging climbers of any level (from beginner to expert). Stables nearby offer horseback riding to the top of the mountains. History buffs can plan to attend the September Heritage Weekend Celebration, featuring Civil War battle reenactments. Canaan Valley Ski resort is only 30 minutes away. Satellite TV and hot tubs are features available in the cabins, which range from $110 to $120 a night (as of January 2010). Pets are welcome for a $10 fee.

Becky's Creek Cabins

Located just 11 miles south of the town Beverly, Becky's Creek Cabins include four rustic rentals with wide front porches. Within a short driving distance, renters will find downhill skiing and snow-boarding slopes, daunting mountain biking and hiking trails, and rock faces that will offer a thrill for the most skillful of climbers. A trout stream on the property affords excellent fishing, and arrangements can be made for golfing. The area is also home to deer, bear and turkey. Dogs are welcome with prior approval. Rates start at $110 a night (as of January 2010).
