Basque food is the native cuisine of the ethnic group that resides in the Pyrenees. Due to their location, spanning northeastern Spain and southwestern France, their cooking is richly infused with Spanish and French influences. In typical Basque dishes, you will find hearty meats, tomato sauces and hints of sweet or spicy red pepper, all served family-style.

Louis' Basque Corner

At Louis' Basque Corner there are no long menus, just the special of the day complete with soup, salad, sides and plenty of red wine. The waitresses at this authentic, family-style eatery wear traditional Basque attire. On a typical night, you can choose lamb, steak or fish an an entree. Like many Basque restaurants, vegetarian options are extremely limited.

Louis' Basque Corner is open seven days a week for dinner from 5 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Lunch is served Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Lunch is $11.95 and dinner is $23.95 per person.

Santa Fe Hotel

The restaurant inside the Santa Fe Hotel serves authentic Basque cuisine with heavy Spanish influences. The specials are traditional, such as ox tail stew, paella, sweetbreads, pigs' feet and bakalao, which is dried salt cod. Lamb shanks, beef stew, roasted chicken and pork chops are also on the menu. The family-style menu at the Santa Fe Hotel includes soup, salad, Basque beans, french fries and your choice of entree. Wine, coffee and dessert is also included.

The restaurant inside the Santa Fe Hotel is open for lunch Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dinner is offered Tuesday through Sunday from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The bar is open from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. The establishment is closed Monday. Lunch is $9 and dinner is $14 for adults and $7 for children under 12.

JT Basque Bar & Dining Room

Just a quick 20-minute drive down historic Highway 395 takes you to Gardnerville, home of the JT Basque Bar & Dining Room. This restaurant has been owned and operated by the same family for more than 50 years. The restaurant has a hometown feel and a dining room ceiling decorated with hats of all shapes and sizes. The cuisine is served Basque family-style. The bread, soup, salad and beans are all-you-can-eat. The meal also includes one entree and dessert.

JT Basque Bar & Dining Room is open Monday through Saturday for lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dinner hours are from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. The bar opens each day at 11 a.m. JT Basque Bar & Dining Room is closed on Sundays. Lunch varies from $1.50 for a cup of soup to $22 for a full meal. Dinner is $22 per person.
