Here you can hike a 4.4 mile trail and see the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Just a short trip down the road and you will hit the Skyline Drive, a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This beautiful stretch of road is great for bird watchers and nature lovers as they can see 59 difference types of mammals and 54 species of birds. Hikers will find numerous hiking paths.

Ashton Country House

If you want to stay in a city while vacationing in the Blue Ridge Mountains, try the Ashton Country House in Staunton. The federalist revival building was constructed in the 1860's and was used as a barracks for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. It rooms contain small libraries, paintings, and comfortable sofa chairs making them ideal for a relaxing cup of tea. The city has five historic districts which preserve the architecture of the homes from the 18th Century to the early 20th Century. The Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Museum offers self-guided tours, and students of the Civil War will enjoy hiking on the Civil War Trails. If wine is your thing then you have come to the right place. A score of wineries are a short ride away with the closest being Barren Ridge Vineyards in nearby Fisherville.
