A small town in Scott County, Waldron, Arkansas puts you near canoeing, fishing, camping, rock climbing and mountain biking. The headwaters of seven different rivers lie in this area, so you'll find everything from whitewater kayaking to calm rivers suitable for beginning paddlers. Experts should head for the Cossatot River---Native Americans called this one "skull crusher" for its class I through class V rapids. Most cabin lodging is located in or around Mena, Waldron's sister city about 30 miles away.

Holly Springs Hide-a-Way Cabins

Just four miles from Mena, Arkansas and half an hour from Waldron, these cabins put you in the heart of the Ouachita Mountains. Located near the Wolf Pen Gap trails, this family-owned duo of cabins is unique in that the owners don't require a two-night stay. Each cabin includes a picnic area with charcoal grill, patio table and patio seating. Choose between the Holly Springs Cabin (it sleeps four) or the Green Door Bungalow (it sleeps two). The Holly Springs Cabin features a futon for two, TV with Dish Network, full kitchen, full bath and washer and dryer. The Green Door Bungalow features a single room with queen bed, full bathroom, TV with Dish Network, microwave and mini fridge. These cabins are located off the county road, but you'll find turn-by-turn directions on their website.

Shady Rest Cabins

Next to the Cossatot River just outside of Mena, these cabins are ideal for paddlers who want easy access to the river. The cabins are along a paved road, so visitors don't need four-wheel drive vehicles to reach them. Still, it's a good idea to call and get directions from the owners before your arrival. You'll have your choice of four cabins, each fully furnished. Rooster's Roost sleeps six and has a back deck with a view of the Cossatot. Bessie's Bunkhouse can sleep 12 and offers a deck with a view of the river as well as a grill and picnic table. Bubba's Bungalow is designed for a small family, sleeping up to four people. Lexi's Dollhouse sleeps up to two people.

Adventure Trails Retreat

Canoeing, kayaking, hiking and mountain biking--this cabin resort lets visitors to it all. The cabin is one quarter-mile from the Cossatot River, in the Caney Creek Wilderness Area. The access road is gravel. The retreat offers storage for canoes, kayaks and mountain bikes. The two-bedroom cabin includes a full kitchen, two beds (one king and one queen), screened porch, air-conditioning, and a washer and dryer. There's also an outdoor kennel for a dog. The larger bunkhouse has 16 bunk beds. There's an outdoor pavilion you can use for a cookout, and meals and maid service are available in both lodgings for an additional fee.
