Mountains flank narrow Seward on the west, and glistening, fjord-like Resurrection Bay touches the narrow town on the east. If you want to hike, fish, kayak or just photograph hundreds of bald eagles, Seward is the place. Voted an All-American City in 2005, this town two hours south of Anchorage provides wildlife, glaciers and wilderness for the savvy adventure traveler. Hiking trails in the area range from the easy 1-mile Two Lakes Trail to the 16-mile Resurrection River Trail. The U.S. National Park office in town can provide details.

Hotel Seward

Family-owned and operated, the 59-room, three-story Hotel Seward enjoys a location in the historic downtown, steps from the Alaska SeaLife Center, the Seward Museum and Native Alaska Cultural Center. The lobby features mounted heads of moose, bear, Dall sheep, musk ox and caribou, as well as a stuffed fox and a bobcat. The hotel offers an Alaska wing and historic wing dating from 1905, with some smaller rooms and European-style rooms with a bathroom across the hall. Pets under 65 lbs. are accepted on the first floor for $25, as of January 2010. The hotel features a lounge, a 24-hour business center and free wireless Internet. Breeze Inn

Located 1 mile north of the SeaLife Center, near the Small Boat Harbor, the Breeze Inn includes a family-style restaurant open for three meals a day, lounge, a conference center and gift shop. Holiday Inn Express Seward Harbor Hotel

Also located next to the harbor, a block south of the Breeze Inn, this Holiday Inn Express contains 82 rooms in a two-story property. Guests can splash around the indoor pool and spa tub. The hotel offers a free breakfast, a business center and high-speed Internet access, as well as satellite TV and free local calls. The hotel offers views of either the harbor, which many guests prefer, or Mount Marathon. Guests who arrive by train with little luggage can walk to the hotel, located one block from the Alaska Railroad depot. For breakfast or lunch, try the Smoke Shack next door. No pets are permitted.
