Yokichi Traditional Farmhouse
For an authentic old Japan experience, stay a night in a 110-year-old thatched roof Japanese farmhouse in the historic village of Shirakawa-go. Located near the Shirokawa River valley, about 90 minutes by bus from Takayama Station, guests in the simple Japanese-style rooms hear the rush of the river at night. The farmhouse owners serve the local fish and other Japanese Alps specialties in the open dining room.
Guest rooms have only tatami mats and Japanese bedding at night, and a low table and cushions by day. It has a shared private bath, and optional breakfast and dinner included. These rustic, old homes do not have central heating, although there are small heaters, and Shirakawa can get more than 6 feet of snow in February, so plan accordingly.
