Okotoks, Alberta, a quaint country town of 4,000 people, is nestled in the Canadian Rockies foothills a leisurely 15-minute drive south of Calgary. This locale has all you need from a big city, but it offers a small-town look and feel. You are just as likely to stumble into a cowboy as an oil executive in this rugged town. The renowned Lake Louise Ski Resort is a 90-minute drive to the west.

This hotel is housed in a mountain-like cabin with big timber beams towering over you the moment you enter. It helps to remember that Okotoks was country long before country was cool, so authenticity is the theme at this quintessential country hotel. The continental style breakfast is always free and include coffee to boot. Standard rooms come with one king or two queen beds, though you can step up to a Jacuzzi suite, a two-room king suite with a pullout sofa in the separate living area. The inn even has a family suite to accommodate groups who may be looking for a longer stay without cramped quarters. The suite includes a kitchen nook with a fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker.

Okotoks Country Inn

All 40 rooms at the Okotoks Country Inn, a small, family-owned hotel located in the heart of downtown Okotoks, have been recently renovated. Guests can choose a room with one queen bed or a room with two queen beds. Each room comes with free Wi-Fi access, a small fridge and in-room coffee. There are also smoking and nonsmoking options. (The smoking rooms have two beds.) The inn also has two large two-room suites that come with full kitchens, and one of the suites is equipped with a jetted tub. Children under 10 stay free with accompanying adults. The inn serves a free deluxe continental breakfast. Other dining options include a Smitty's right across the street. The hotel allows pets but charges a nightly fee of $15 per pet.

Ramada Inn High River

The newly built Ramada Inn lends a chic touch to High River, Alberta, a rural town less than 30 minutes south of Okotoks. The hotel provides several room options, including rooms with kitchenettes, rooms with three beds and Jacuzzi suites. Guests can enjoy free deluxe continental breakfast and high-speed Internet. An indoor pool with a hot tub and water slide highlights the fitness area. As of January 2010, the rates varied from $129 Canadian for a room to $209 for a suite.
