Fort Pierre National Grassland
Located about 30 minutes from Murdo, the Fort Pierre National Grassland offers nature lovers a chance to view snakes, prairie dogs, burrowing owls, antelope, and other animals in their natural habitats. This protected area, known for its stunning mixed grass prairies, offers camping, lake and pond fishing, picnicking and a variety of wintertime activities. Park maps are recommended for visitors who wish to camp in the area.

Badlands National Park
Featuring awe-inspiring landscapes and fascinating geological formations, plus rich fossil beds and hundreds of wildlife species, Badlands National Park lets visitors explore South Dakota in a very special way. The park offers a wide range of activities, including back country camping, hiking, challenging bike routes, and interesting nature trails. Visitors can also take advantage of several ranger programs and visit unique sites like the park's Tipi Village to learn more about the Native Americans who once made their homes in this area. Badlands National Park is located about 60 miles from Murdo, and is open 24 hours a day, as of January 2010.

Murdo Municipal Swimming Pool
Summertime visitors can enjoy a refreshing dip in Murdo's city pool. The full-size, L-shaped swimming pool features a range of depths for experienced swimmers, from 3-10 feet, as well as a fenced-in, one-foot-deep wading pool for children and infants to enjoy. Sunbathers can relax on the pool deck after a splash in the pool.

Farm Island Recreation Area
Located just east of Pierre, about an hour from Murdo, this unique recreation area offers great outdoor fun for visitors of all ages. Enjoy camping, swimming, sunbathing, hiking, biking, fishing, cross country skiing, and bird-watching at this park that is open year-round. Farm Island's 8 miles of interesting hiking trails offer a quiet way to observe the area's wildlife and natural beauty. Campers can take advantage of more than 90 campsites in the park's two campgrounds, and anglers can fish for several different species, including smallmouth bass, white bass and northern pike from the park's fishing dock or from the shores of the Missouri River.
