Houston is home to more than 300 parks including Hermann Park, which houses the Houston Zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Terry Hershey Park, Lake Houston Park, Memorial Park, Tranquility Park, Sesquicentennial Park, Discovery Green and Sam Houston Park. Located on the southeast coast of Texas, Houston is the largest city in Texas according to the 2008 U.S. Census estimate. Local activities include boating, canoeing and kayaking Spring Creek; and hunting and fishing the bayou. After a day spent working up an appetite biking and hiking the many area parks and green spaces, enjoy a meal at one of the city's kosher restaurants.

New York Bagel

Located in the Westwood Park area, New York Bagel is certified Pareve/Dairy Kosher by the Houston Kasruth Association. The ET, or everything, bagel is a local favorite. Other bagel flavors include cinnamon raisin, onion and a marbled bagel, which is half white bread, half rye bread. In addition to several varieties of bagels, New York Bagel also serves muffins, challah and cookies. All bakery items are baked fresh daily. Look closely at the pre-packaged items in the refrigerated case, not all of these items are kosher. New York Bagel is open during Shabbat.

Super Pita Bakery and Deli

Super Pita is really two eateries in one. The bakery selections include cookies and pastries, while the Mediterranean deli menu includes pitas and falafels. The shawarma, a wrap filled with lamb, chicken, turkey or beef is also offered. The schnitzel (basically a breaded and fried chicken or turkey patty) is served with a variety of side dishes. The bare-bones interior is filled with pre-packaged foods and various Jewish and Middle Eastern baked goods ready to be purchased. Super Pita is under the supervision of the Houston Kashruth Association. Super Pita closes an hour before Shabbat on Friday and reopens Sunday morning.

Suzie's Grill

Suzie's Grill offers gourmet Mediterranean cuisine. Appetizers such as Moroccan cigars, soft meat filling wrapped in filo dough that is then deep fried; and entrees like turkey shawarma fill the menu. Also on the menu are several sub sandwiches and falafel, round deep-fried balls made from chickpeas or fava beans. A separate Chinese menu is offered daily, and includes stir fry, sesame chicken, and chicken lo mein. Under supervision of the Houston Kashruth Association, Suzie's Grill is certified Glatt kosher. Suzie's Grill closes Friday at 3 p.m. for Shabbat and reopens Sunday morning.
