Vacations in Skagway, Alaska

Vacations in Skagway, Alaska
Skagway, "Gateway to the Klondike," is on the southeastern coast of Alaska bordering Canada, and offers "unparalleled sightseeing and recreation opportunities," according to the city's tourism bureau. From charter fishing to icefield expedition to helicopter glacier landings, Skagway is an Alaskan alternative to typical vacation destinations. Getting to Skagway is an adventure in itself. People arrive by small aircraft from Juneau, by a state ferry, by a cruise ship, by a train, by a motor coach or by a car on the Alaska Highway.

Dog Sled-Helicopter Tours

Temsco Helicopters offers a "flightseeing" tour in the air, followed by a dog sledding experience on the Denver Glacier. Flights leave Skagway and last about 30 minutes round trip. After landing at Juneau Icefield in the Tongass National Forest, guests spend 30 minutes with mushers at the dog camp. Actual time sledding, whether as a driver or a passenger, is another 30 minutes. Glacier boots are provided, and personal belongings must be securely stored at the Temsco office during the tour.

Charter Salmon Fishing

Year-round resident Captain Larry leads fishing expeditions each summer from Skagway in search of king salmon for four-hour sessions departing daily at 7:30 a.m. The crew provides a guided tour while traveling to the fishing location and will also clean the fish at the conclusion of the trip. Chilkoot's charter boats have heated cabins, restrooms, hot and cold beverages, and hold up to six anglers. A fishing license with a king salmon tag is required and is available on the boat or in town. Complimentary ground transportation is provided to those arriving by cruise ship or staying at a hotel.

Skagway Rafting: Hike and Float

The Skagway Hike and Float tour is four hours and includes a 1.8-mile hike to a 45 minute river-rafting float experience that will "retrace the steps of the Gold Rush stampeders on the infamous Chilkoot Trail," according to Klondike Tours' website. The hike follows a moderately difficult trail through a northern temperate rain forest, becoming more even as the river is approached. The raft trip on the Taiya River is a calm float and all ages and skill levels should feel comfortable with a proper life jacket.
