Franklin, the seat of St. Mary Parish, was founded in 1808 by French, Acadian, German and Irish settlers. Located on Bayou Tech, Franklin became a center of agriculture, with numerous sugar plantations. With more than 420 buildings, the Franklin Historic District is a member of the National Register of Historic Places. Bayou Teche and the Atchafalaya Basin offer fishing, boating, hiking and outdoor recreation. Franklin hotels are close to historic buildings and Louisiana waterways.
