Located overlooking the banks of the St. Croix River on the border between the United States and Canada, Calais is located in an area of Maine rich with four-season recreational opportunities. There are hiking and biking trails throughout eastern Washington County while countless nearby lakes and ponds offer swimming and boating. The Atlantic Ocean is a short drive away, as is Acadia National Park. When the weather turns colder, Mt. Jefferson in Lee offers skiing and snowboarding less than two hours from Calais. There are several small motels and inns in Calais and the surrounding communities for lodging in the area, while chain hotels are located two hours away in Bangor.

Calais Motor Inn

Located on Main Street (Route 1) just minutes from downtown and less than a mile from the Canadian border, the Calais Motor Inn is the town's largest motel, offering clean, comfortable and affordable accommodations.

The property features 70 guest rooms located in the main part of the hotel and a detached annex. Rooms have either two double beds or one king bed, and there are smoking and non-smoking units available.

In their room at the Calais Motor Inn, guests will find cable television, air conditioning, Internet access and a telephone, with free local calls. The motel also offers an Olympic-sized swimming pool, hot tub and exercise room for guest enjoyment. There is also a restaurant on premise serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days-a-week, and the Calais Motor Inn has the largest banquet facility in the town.

Room rates are $59 and up per night, and special rates are available for large groups. Reservations can only be made by calling the motel directly. Please note because the hotel is the only one in Calais with a swimming pool, the property fills up quickly during the winter months due to youth basketball tournaments in the area.

International Motel

The International Motel is the only lodging in Calais that offers guests a view of the St. Croix River and Canada from their room. The motel offers 61 standard guest rooms plus one suite, equipped with a kitchenette and Jacuzzi spa.

Guests at the International Motel have their choice of a room in the one-story main building, which has units with two double beds, or the two-level riverfront building, which has rooms with one king bed or two double beds. The riverfront building, which is detached from the office and main portion of the motel, is also home to the premium suite.

All guest rooms are equipped with free wireless Internet, remote controlled cable television, air conditioning, telephone with free local calls. The International Motel offers pet friendly rooms, and there is also a restaurant and lounge next door.

Rates for a room in the main building are $65 to $75 per night, and river view units are $75 per night. The premium suite costs $149 per night. All rates listed are in-season and are lower in the winter.

Downeaster Motel

Located seven miles south of Calais in Robbinston overlooking St. Croix Island, the Downeaster Motel is open seasonally from May to October offering affordable accommodations for travelers visiting eastern Maine.

Guests can choose from rooms with two double beds or one king bed. All units have a small table and chairs as well as cable television. There are no telephones in the rooms, but guests can use one at the front desk for local calls.

The motel also rents small kitchenettes, which are separate from the rooms and contain a stove, refrigerator and cooking utensils. Guests can also enjoy a daily continental breakfast.

Room rates begin at $54.95 per night for two people with an additional charge for extra people. Kitchenettes are an additional $15 per day. There are discounts for senior citizens and for longer stays. Reservations cannot be made online and must be made by calling the motel directly.
