Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, is located on the southeastern shore of Oahu and is a perennially popular tourist destination. As the home of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, Honolulu offers vegetarians several restaurants that cater exclusively to their special diet, though none are exclusively vegan. Each patron should make his or her dietary requirements and preferences clear when ordering.

Down to Earth

This recently renovated vegetarian natural food store has a deli and juice counter and a hot food and salad bar inside. Fruit and coconut smoothies and shakes are local favorites and the deli serves a wide variety of sandwiches, wraps and Mexican dishes made-to-order. Food from the hot and salad bars is charged by weight and outdoor seating is available. Shop for local organic produce and other groceries after your meal. Down to Earth is open daily.

Govindaji's Vegetarian Cuisine

This cozy, inexpensive and casual Indian restaurant near Hawaii Pacific University is open weekdays for lunch only. Two entrees, one vegan, are offered daily in addition to some a la carte items. The entrees are prepared fresh each morning and change daily depending on the availability of vegetables and other produce. Typical entrees include brown rice, veggies, salad, soup and dessert for under $8. Seating is limited. This restaurant has no website; please call ahead to confirm the hours of operation.

Hale

This elegant restaurant specializes in macrobiotic organic cuisine that incorporates locally grown ingredients. The selections are primarily vegetarian and vegan although some dishes include fish like the salmon salad. Seitan cutlet with fried onion and teriyaki tempeh with lotus roots are typical entrees. Diners can also sample several dishes at once for under $13 by ordering the Macrobiotic Lunch Plate. Most dishes are less than $20. Hale is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Sunday.

Legend Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant

Legend is tucked away in an alley that leads to the Chinese Cultural Plaza in Honolulu's Chinatown and can therefore be difficult to find, but the intrepid diner's efforts will be rewarded. Legend offers an extensive menu and specializes in faux meat dishes and vegetarian dim sum. Diners will enjoy large portions at reasonable prices (between $10 and $15). The restaurant is open during lunch for dim sum and re-opens for dinner after 5 pm but is closed on Wednesdays. Legend does not have a website; please phone ahead to confirm the hours of operation.
