Brigham Young, one of the founders of the Mormon religion, changed the name to match that of his birthplace in Montpelier, Vermont. The small city of just over 2,500 people is a great launching point for family friendly activities such as visiting the The National Oregon/California Trail Center, which has exhibits on the covered wagon trips of the 1800s, and Bear Lake State Park. Bear Lake, which is 20 miles long and 8 mile wide, has two beaches and opportunities for boating, waterskiing and fishing. The park is within a 45-minute drive of Montpelier.
