With every conceivable type of food available in one form or another, be it from a food stand or an upscale restaurant, Houston has it all, including an array of Asian cuisine. Eat in any one of the fine Vietnamese establishments and you will see there is more to Houston than just Tex-Mex.

Mo Mong Vietnamese

Tucked away in the Montrose area of Houston, Mo Mong serves dishes based on traditional recipes. Situated over two floors, Mo Mong offers dining in a contemporary setting. The restaurant is ideally located to serve Montrose residents and nearby River Oaks and has been doing so for more than 10 years. Among the restaurants features are a fully stocked bar and outdoor patio area. Every Wednesday is Martini Wednesday, a Mo Mong tradition, when martinis are $3 each from 5 to 10 p.m. Recommended dishes include orange chicken, a lightly battered chicken covered in the house special orange sauce and the basil curry beef, which is beef in sweet curry sauce. For a spin on a traditional dish, try the Vietnamese fajitas.

The Vietnam Restaurant

Located in the Heights, Vietnam Restaurant has been a dining institution since the 1980s. Originally located in downtown, it moved to its current address in 2003 where it has continued to be a meeting place for professionals. Open every day but Sunday, the restaurant operates a BYOB policy and closes for two hours Monday through Friday between 3 and 5 p.m. There is a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes available; recommended are the Vietnam tofu, which is cooked in the house special sauce, and the pepper pork simmered in fish sauce. Vietnam Restaurant also makes deliveries, so you can get your favorite dishes to go.

Mai's Restaurant

With a strong base of regular customers, Mai's Restaurant has a long colorful history. The restaurant caters to every palate with vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes available. Open from 10 to 3 a.m.Sunday through Thursday and 10 to 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Mai's offers food for whenever you are hungry. The family owned restaurant serves Vietnamese dishes steeped in tradition. Meat lovers might enjoy the Bo Luc Lac Dac Biet, a spicy garlic beef dish served with steamed rice while the Dau Hu Xao Ca Ri, a tofu curry mixed with coconut milk is ideal for vegetarians.
