Nestled on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, this heritage town is surrounded by forest hills and beaches and hosts several annual events like the Paddlefest, New Year's Day polar bear swim and the Ladysmith Festival of Lights. Ladysmith also offers outdoor recreational opportunities like hiking and biking on its vast forest trails and swimming, sailing and kayaking on its famous Transfer Beach. Kiwi Cove Lodge

Purchased in 1994, this 10.2-acre property was once a vacant lot with thick overgrowth. Its owners, Doug and Peggy Kolosoff, built the 9,000-square-foot lodge in 2001 and planted 132 kiwi vines around it. Today the lodge offers both room and cottage accommodations. The two-story lodge has four rooms with their own private entrance on the main floor and eight rooms with private decks on the upper floor. All rooms include a free full breakfast and complimentary wireless high-speed Internet access. For bigger groups, the 1,200-square-foot Kiwi Cottage is fully equipped with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full-size kitchen, wood stove, cable television, free wireless high-speed Internet access and two sofa beds. A third bedroom with private entrance also is available on the west side of the cottage. Cottage guests can enjoy a full breakfast for a minimal fee. For outdoor recreation, guests can explore the McNab's Corn Maze, which is less than two miles away or enjoy bungee jumping, treetop climbing and zip lining at the Bungy Zone, which is three miles away.

Inn of the Sea

Just 20 minutes from Nanaimo, this four-acre Vancouver Island waterfront resort offers one-bedroom, two-bedroom or hotel room suites. Built in 1939, Yellow Point Lodge is surrounded by 165 acres of private coastal rain forest with almost two miles of waterfront area overlooking the Gulf Islands. It offers both room and cottage accommodations, which include three full set meals and unlimited use of their recreational facilities like the 180-foot saltwater swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, tennis courts, cruiser bicycles and kayaks. The rooms come with cable television and free wireless high-speed Internet access while the cabins are equipped with kitchenettes and fireplaces. The lodge offers walking trails right on their property and free boat tours of the surrounding islands every summer.
