Pet Friendly Beach Cottages in Sanibel, Florida

Sanibel Island is nicknamed "shell island," because of the large array of shells that can be found on the beach each morning. Sanibel has surf fishing, golf courses, tennis courts, winding canoe trails and island-long bicycle paths. Sanibel Beach is pet-friendly; pets do need to be kept leashed and owners must be sure to clean up after them.

Beachview Cottages include a pool and a sundeck and tiki hut on the beach. There is also a place to clean shells and fish, and barbecue grills are available. The cottages have king-size beds and cable TV, along with weekly maid service, daily towel service and fully equipped kitchens. The beach just steps from the cottages, and bike rental and Segway tours of the island are available less than 2 miles away at Billy's Bicycle Rental. Rates in 2010 range from $165 to $309, depending on unit and season, and there are some special package discounts available.

Tropical Winds Motel & Cottages

Tropical Winds has airy, tropically decorated one- or two-bedroom duplex cottages that are just steps to the beach. There are fully equipped kitchens, and the bedrooms feature comfortable full-size beds. There is no pool at this complex, but miles of open shoreline lie adjacent to the property, and fishing is available on-site. Tropical Winds is private and away from the crowds but just 6 miles to Captiva. Rates in 2010 range from about $160 to $300 per night, depending on season and unit chosen, and pets are welcome.

Waterside Inn on the Beach

The Waterside Inn offers cottages, rooms and efficiency units, all pet-friendly. With a central courtyard featuring a heated pool and lounge chairs and tables with umbrellas, the complex is just steps to the sand. There is an on-site laundry, barbecue grills, shuffleboard courts and rental bikes on the property; the Sanibel bike trails are within a half mile and run the length of the island. Pets smaller than 30 pounds and over two years old are allowed in some cottages. Units all have cable TV; some have data ports and HBO. Cottages are decorated in island style, and there is a Honeymoon Cottage with an electric fireplace and double Jacuzzi tub. Rates in 2010 range from $145 to $395, depending on the unit and the season.
