New York City is famous for many things, including a varied and world-class restaurant scene. Vegetarians, who often find their dining choices limited elsewhere, enjoy an incredible variety of establishments throughout the city. The following sampling of restaurants includes establishments that are vegetarian but not necessarily vegan. All within 1/2 mile of Union Square in New York (Broadway and W 14th St). All prices listed are as of December 2009.

Maoz Vegetarian

Maoz is a global chain of small vegetarian falafel fast food restaurants with two locations near Union Square. The menu is simple but there is a salad and toppings bar and the French fries are a perennial favorite. Maoz is a good option for a quick meal on the go but there is not much seating available inside. The Union Square restaurant opens at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays. Both locations are open for lunch and dinner.

Pure Food and Wine

This upscale vegan restaurant in Gramercy Park specializes in raw food cuisine and fine wine. Pure Food and Wine has been a featured New York eatery in Forbes and New York Magazine. The dishes are made with local organic ingredients and no gluten, dairy, tofu, tempeh or seitan is used. During the summer, patrons can enjoy the outdoor private garden. Entrees alone range from $25 to $40. Pure Food and Wine is open daily for dinner.

Curly's Vegetarian Lunch

Curly's Vegetarian Lunch is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This blue plate diner serves vegetarian and vegan comfort food at reasonable prices: everything on the menu is $13 or less. Dishes include omelets, vegan pancakes, a variety of burgers, several Mexican options, salads and sandwiches. Desserts like bread pudding and banana chocolate chimichangas are also available.

Angelica Kitchen

Angelica Kitchen is an organic vegan restaurant that incorporates local produce into every dish. Some of the core menu items include a dragon bowl made up of rice, beans, tofu and steamed vegetables, an open-faced tempeh sandwich and norimaki. Dishes range between $10 and $20. Angelica Kitchen is open daily, does not accept reservations, only accepts cash and does not serve alcohol, although patrons are welcome to bring their own wine.
