Lithuanian Restaurants in Philadelphia

Lithuanian Restaurants in Philadelphia
When searching for a Lithuanian dinner, the neighborhood of Port Richmond in northeast Philadelphia will satisfy a craving for traditional Eastern European cuisine. This neighborhood is also home to the Lithuanian Music Hall, which hosts private parties as well as an annual Lithuanian Fair with food, music, dancing and crafts.

This area hosts one of the oldest and biggest Memorial Day parades, and on New Year's Day, the Polish American String Band of the famous Philadelphia Mummers gives a special performance for the community along Allegheny Avenue, as it has since the group was founded in Port Richmond back in 1933. While in the area, it is worth taking a look at the historic ship terminals that give the neighborhood its name.

Syrenka Luncheonette

Syrenka is a cafeteria-style restaurant that the Philadelphia Citypaper describes as "dirt-cheap" and Philly.com says serves up a "soul-soothing stew." You grab a tray and pile it high with pierogies, potato pancakes and sauerkraut. Then stop by the Baltic Bakery around the corner for dessert.

New Wave Cafe

The New Wave Cafe is a mom-and-pop shop serving the locals authentic potato pancakes and borscht. You'll hear Polish spoken among the customers and watch Eastern European television reports while slurping bigos, a mix of cabbage and diced kielbasa with rye bread on the side. On weekends it becomes a disco where you can sip Polish beer while sitting in the back booth munching pierogies, fried or steamed.

It serves 16 different homemade soups and entrees as well as Polish beer and some poppy seed strudel to top it all off. The market is similar to Philly's famous Italian market in its genuine feel, and the friendly staff will guide you through the selection of homemade recipes and imported foods, including 10 different kinds of smoked kielbasa.
