Called an "affordable family vacation" spot by the Melbourne-Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce, Melbourne, Florida, has over 33 miles of beach perfect for such outdoor activities as snorkeling, boating, swimming and fishing. Several golf courses are also located throughout the city. Melbourne is located about an hour's drive south of the Kennedy Space Center and about an hour east of Disney World in what is called Florida's Space Coast, according to the City of Melbourne. After working up an appetite from a day in the water, visiting the local zoo or enjoying one of the many museums, stop by one of the great local steak houses.

Chart House Restaurant

Watch boats float down the Indian River while dining at the Melbourne location of this national chain. Open for dinner nightly, with a Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., and a happy hour, Chart House does take reservations, by phone, in person, or through their website. Menu items at the fine-dining eatery include steaks, prime rib and seafood. Chart House is known for such items as Snapper Hemingway, Shrimp Fresca, and Hot Chocolate Lava Cake.

Durango Oak Fire Steakhouse

Durango Oak Fire Steakhouse was named "Best Steakhouse" several times by Florida Today magazine, according to Durango's website. While Durango Steakhouse specializes in oak fire-grilled steaks, menu items also include chicken, pork and seafood. Unlike other restaurants that offer only a handful of margaritas to choose from, Durango's menu includes a whopping 28 varieties of margaritas. Decorated in an Old West style, the casual, family-style restaurant's warm and inviting atmosphere is achieved by the comfortable booths and wood tables, dim lights and low-playing music.

Makoto Seafood & Steakhouse of Japan

Before there was Makoto's Ginger Dressing, there was the Makoto Seafood and Steakhouse of Japan in Melbourne, Florida. In fact, according to the company's website, customers' requests for the ginger dressing recipe convinced the company to begin offering the dressing in local stores, and now at retailers across the country. Makoto's opened its doors in 1985 and continues to serve sesame chicken, beef kabobs and teriyaki chicken at its steakhouse located just a couple of blocks from the beach. Chefs prepare many items table-side on hibachi grills, and the restaurant recently added a sushi bar. Makoto's is open for both lunch and dinner, and children eat free on Sundays.
