Ponchatoula is a small community in Tangipahoa Parish on the northern shores of Lake Ponchatrain and Lake Maurepas. Self described as the "Strawberry Capital of the World", Ponchatoula blends the quiet charm of a small town with the welcoming friendliness of Southern hospitality. Being along the water makes Ponchatoula a great place to fish, boat, swim or enjoy the aquatic views. It is also 14 miles to Tickfaw State Park in neighboring Springfield. Accommodations in Ponchatoula are easy to find.

The Days Inn is a couple of miles away in the town of Hammond. Hotel and guest room amenities include free breakfast and newspaper, pool, high-speed Internet access, microwave, refrigerator, work desk and cable TV. The hotel is about half an hour from the town of Folsom where you can visit the 900-acre Global Wildlife Center. There you can get a close look at 4,000 animals from the exotic to the threatened and endangered. About 20 miles from the hotel is Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville where you can fish on the Tchefuncte River or enjoy the view from the park's nature trail.

The Best Western on Duo Drive in Hammond just a few miles from Ponchatoula and offers free breakfast, high-speed Internet access, a business center, laundry facility and pool. Guest rooms include cable TV, free local calls, coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave. If you're up for it you can take a horseback ride on wooded trails along Copper and Chappepella Creek when you visit Southern Acres Riding Farm. It's just 24 miles away in Loranger. Another short trip, just 31 miles, will take you to Foutainebleau State Park in the town of Mandeville. The 2,200-acre park, on the shore of Lake Ponchartrain, has hiking and nature trails where you are likely to see many of the more than 400 species of birds and animals living in the park.
