Summerville, South Carolina is part of the Low Country, an area of the south where restaurants serve gumbo and seafood-inspired dishes. Despite its southern location, Summerville's cuisine is more than shrimp and grits. There is also a fine line of Italian restaurants in the area that were started with New York roots. Tomatoes Italian Restaurant

Tomatoes Italian Restaurant was voted Best Italian Restaurant in the Low Country in 2008. Tomatoes has an Old World Italy style to it, boasting décor that is supposed to be reminiscent of the Brat Pack days. All of the dining furniture is made of hard wood, while the meals are served family style--large portions meant to be shared. Specialty dishes include Chicken Francaise, Veal Scalloppini and Thinly Sliced Steak topped with mozzarella and scampi sauce. Hours of operation are Saturdays 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Mustard Seed

The Mustard Seed may seem unassuming from the outside, but this old Summerville favorite serves simple, healthy meals that are filling to the stomach and pleasing to the tongue. Although not categorized as an Italian restaurant in name, the Mustard Seed serves mostly pasta dishes for lunch and dinner in a dark, atmospheric setting.

Pasta entrees include Fettuccine Carbonara Bacon with sweet peas, Pasta Crudo Fresh Roma Tomato and a Sweet Potato with Gorganzola Walnut and Parsley Ravioli. Hours of operation are 11a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday for lunch. Dinner hours are 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights. Red Pepper

The Summerville Journal Scene voted the Red Pepper the Best Italian Restaurant in 2009. The Red Pepper is owned by a single family that migrated from the Rochester, New York area. Entrees are made form scratch. Desserts such as the Italian Rum Cake are also made in house. The Red Pepper serves specialty meals such as Cozza Fra Diavolo, Pasta alla Norma and Gnocchi e Diced Salmon.

Business hours are Monday through Saturday, 11a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch. Dinner hours are Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Andolini's Pizza

Andolini's Pizza is another Low Country establishment that also has New York roots with its owners. A short trip from Summerville, the North Charleston location is a New York style pizza restaurant that serves thin crust pizzas loaded with toppings from end to end. All pies are hand-tossed and only come in 19-inch sizes for whole pizzas. Andolini's has been voted Best Pizza for 18 years running. The menu items include lunch specials such as two cheese slices and a beverage priced in 2010 for $7 even. The Almost Hawaiian Pie has Italian sausage, onions, pineapple and feta cheese for toppings. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
