While Philadelphia is regarded as an urban city, outdoor enthusiasts can find plenty of activities in and around this historic city. From the Sedgley Woods Disc Golf Course to Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, there are plenty of outdoor attractions for active visitors. The Philadelphia area is also home to dozens of parks and biking trails. Philadelphia also offers several organic restaurants for health-conscious visitors.

Horizons

Horizons is a vegan restaurant specializing in organic ingredients and healthy cooking techniques. Appetizers include Portobello carpaccio, eggplant empanadas, Vietnamese tacos and Jamaican barbecued seitan. The menu also features organic vegan entrees such as pan-seared peppercorn tofu, hearts of palm crepes and grilled seitan with horseradish crème and roasted red pepper tapenade. Guests can stroll or jog through Starr Garden Park, which is just a few minutes' walk from the restaurant. Washington Square is also nearby; visitors can see the "moon tree," a sycamore tree grown from seeds that were carried to the moon on the Apollo XIV mission. Horizons is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and is closed Sunday and Monday. Reservations are recommended.

Essene

Essene is a natural foods store and deli located in the Fabric Row district of Philadelphia. Guests can enjoy the architecture of the area as they stroll along historic streets. The deli offers organic vegetarian selections, including Japanese, Indian and Moroccan entrees. Because Essene focuses on using locally grown ingredients, the menu changes with the season. There is also a bakery offering over 50 vegan breads and desserts made with organic flours, fruits, nuts and sweeteners. The deli is open from 9 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. seven days a week.

Philadelphia Pita Pit serves fresh pitas made with organic chicken, meats and vegetables. Pita options include buffalo chicken, Italian sausage, baba ghannouj, falafel and veggie steak. The menu offers a large selection of smoothies which includes raspberry, citrus and peach. This restaurant also offers a soup of the day. Philadelphia Pita Pit is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
