Only 25 miles south of Portland, in Kennebunkport, Maine, sits Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Spanning more than 14,000 acres, this refuge covers 50 miles of distinctively rocky coastline. As stated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this area was established "to protect valuable salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds." Animals often seen here include the "piping plover, the New England cottontail rabbit, raccoons, minks, foxes, seals, moose and black bears." Try the corned beef hash and eggs or the omelet with cheese for breakfast. Dinner service offers a limited menu of fresh daily fish specials at a market price along with a beef and chicken offering. Business hours at the Porthole are seasonal. From January to March eat breakfast or lunch Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Regular hours, which include dinner service, resume around Memorial Day; call the restaurant for details. Live comedy entertainment is on the bill on peak season weekend nights.

David's Creative Cuisine

In the heart of Portland's Arts District sits David's Creative Cuisine. Expect an energized atmosphere and attentive staff. The New York Times called this restaurant "a bright spot in Portland," and Portland Magazine reviewers said they had a "truly spectacular meal." A sampling of the menu includes "exotic mushroom ravioli, pepper-crusted sushi rare tuna and Yankee barbecue pizza." David's Creative Cuisine serves lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m.
