Italian Restaurants in Mill Valley, California

Italian Restaurants in Mill Valley, California
Mill Valley, California is located north of San Francisco and sits at the foot of Mount Tamalpias. Long a haven for musicians and artists, this community also takes advantage of the hiking and biking trails that wind up the mountainside. Runners may know Mill Valley for the Dipsea Trail race, first started in 1905 and challenging runners to a 7.4 mile course beginning in Mill Valley and ending at Stinson Beach. Several Italian eateries are available after a day on the trails.

Piazza D'Angelo

Piazza D'Angelo has been a mainstay in their Mill Valley location overlooking the town plaza for 25 years. Their dedication to simple Italian regional fare made with fresh, local ingredients earned them a Fork and Knife award in 2007 from the Michelin Guide.

Menu items include antipasti plates made with seared local scallops, baby shitakes and truffle oil or a signature Carpaccio made with locally raised beef, sliced paper thin and served with wild arugula, shaved parmesan cheese, capers and olive oil. Pasta includes house made raviolis stuffed with butternut squash and pine nuts or pears and ricotta cheese, providing a fresh variation on a classic dish. The restaurant also fires a wood burning oven that bakes fresh pizza topped with meats and cheese such as Calbrese sausage, imported Italian prosciutto cotto, goat cheese or mascarpone. Imported Italian or local California wines highlight a wine list of over 200 selections to round out your meal. Piazza D'Angelo is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and offers a Sunday brunch until 3:00pm. Reservations can be made online.

Frantoio Ristorante and Olive Oil

Frantoio Ristorante offers diners an opportunity to witness fresh certified organic olive oil being made while they dine. During the winter months of November and December guests can watch fresh olives being crushed in the production facility and enjoy just-pressed oils at the table.

The menu changes four times during the year to take advantage of seasonal foods but staple dishes include a polenta cake with gorgonzola cheese and wild mushrooms, a seafood soup with clams, mussels and calamari, fresh salad topped with house smoked salmon and local sole poached in the house olive oil. Entrees are crafted with local grain-fed beef and lamb, house made pastas and free-range chicken. The restaurant is open for dinner daily at 5:30 with the bar opening at 4:30. Stefano's Pizzeria

Stefano's, an intimate pizzeria located in downtown Mill Valley, has been in business for over 30 years in the same location. In 2004, Stefano's renovated their building and installed solar panels, providing 100 percent of their power and currently making it the only pizzeria in the country to be completely powered by the sun.

Stefano's offers the usual pepperoni and veggie pizzas but also livens up the menu by including meats such as linguica, clams, anchovies and offering a choice of standard tomato, creamy garlic or a barbecue sauce on their pies. Calzones and hot sandwiches like Philly cheese steaks, meatball or chicken sausage with peppers and onions are also on the menu. Beer and wine are served along with standard fountain sodas. Stefano's is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and offers a complete take-out menu.
