Merrillville, located in Lake County, was once a densely forested area which was home to the peaceful hunting and fishing Potawatomi Indians. Though the tribe is no longer a dominant presence in Merrillville, the area is still a great place to enjoy nature. You can visit numerous outdoor venues such as Lemon Lake County Park where you can play, fish or hike year-round and in winter, go sledding. There's plenty to do in and around Merrillville and if you feel like taking an excursion to surrounding areas, the town is less than an hour's drive from Chicago.
