Irvington, which is a suburban river town in Westchester, New York, has a half dozen restaurants, some with spectacular views of the Hudson River. The small, affluent town sits along the Hudson River, only 20 miles north of Manhattan. Accessible via the Metro North railroad line, you can also get to the town via bike or kayak. Bikers and hikers often take advantage of the Old Croton Trailway that runs through this picturesque town.

Getting to Irvington

Half the fun of eating in Irvington is the journey getting there. To work up a good appetite, hike or bike the Croton Aqueduct, which is west of Broadway. You can also kayak on the Hudson River and enjoy gorgeous views of the Palisades. Store your kayak at Scenic Hudson Park (25.3 E, 41°02'30"N, 073°52'26"W). The Hudson River Valley Greenway has made Kayak storage racks available. Each rack stores two boats and up to 12 cubic feet of gear. You provide the locks and cables for this short-term storage.

Chutney Masala, Haru Hana, Mima Kitchen and Wine Bar

A mix of restaurants on Main Street offer ethnic fare, and can be reached starting at the railroad tracks near the water and continuing (via an underpass) along an uphill walk from the waterfront. Chutney Masala, which is in the parking lot across from the Metro North station, offers Indian cuisine in a casually upscale setting that has river views. Sushi and traditional Japanese cuisine can be found at Haru Hana, which does takeout as well. Mima Kitchen and Wine Bar offers cheese plates, antipasti, fresh pasta and traditional Italian cuisine.

River City Grill

At the top of Main Street, you will hit Broadway (Route 9). If you head south, you'll find River City Grill, a stylish Irvington restaurant that offers eclectic dishes. They offer light fare between lunch and dinner. Decor includes warm lighting, overstuffed chairs and a coppertop bar. Takeout is available.

Red Hat on the River

If you don't want to stray far from the beautiful waterfront, there is Red Hat on the River, which offers gorgeous river views year round, and the chance to stroll along the Scenic Hudson Park before or after your meal. The park has about a mile of walking paths, a boat launch, and kayak storage. This upscale French/American Bistro has a lovely patio overlooking the river. There's a handsome bar and two spacious levels of the restaurant, and a rooftop bar that's very busy in the spring and summer.

For deliciously healthy fare, give the Black Cat Cafe a try. You can choose from organic sandwiches, soup, salad, and baked goods. Black Cat Cafe uses produce from local farmers. On a nice day, take away your meal to eat down in Scenic Hudson Park.
