Located about five miles south from downtown Providence, Cranston, R.I., is small city that is home to the oldest home in Rhode Island, The Thomas Fenner House, which was built in 1677. Visit the Edgewood Yacht Club, also a historic site, built in 1908. Enjoy a round of golf at the Cranston Country Club, which is open to the public. Rhode Island is surrounded by water on three sides, so ocean activities are never too far away. After a day of exploration, sit down for a great Italian meal in this largely Italian community.

Marchetti's

Open since 1982, Marchetti's has become the neighborhood favorite with its casual atmosphere and generous portions. This affordable eatery offers a broad range of wines and house specialties such as pink vodka penne, frutti di mare and veal saltimbocca. A kids menu is available for little gourmands. Ask about daily specials. Marchetti's is open for lunch, dinner and late-night dinner but is closed on Mondays.

Caffe Itri

Named after a small town in the Lazo region of Italy, Caffe Itri serves classic Italian cuisine and an extensive wine list (with a Nitro-Tap system) in a warm, casual atmosphere. This friendly eatery serves homemade dishes like lobster ravioli, penne putanesca and breaded eggplant, to name a few. Caffe Itri is open for lunch and dinner daily. Ask about daily specials. Smart casual dress would be perfect.

Twin Oaks

Established in 1933, this Rhode Island institution is famous mainly for its steaks, however, a fairly large menu is available, featuring Italian favorites. Eggplant parmesan, Italian sausage, peppers and fries, and Italian antipasto are a few of the Italian dishes served at this reasonably priced, semi-casual restaurant. Choose from a wide range of wines and specialty cocktails. Ask about daily specials, and a children's menu is available. Twin Oaks is open for lunch and dinner but is closed on Mondays.
