Among the buildings and skyscrapers, Dallas has preserved 21,000 acres for parks, with more than 60 acres for jogging and cycling trails. There are many activities for the outdoor enthusiast outside the city. Cedar Hill State Park is 20 miles from Dallas and offers mountain biking and hiking. For campers and boaters, Lake Lewisville is 35 miles north of Dallas.

For hungry visitors in the mood for traditional German cuisine, several restaurants in the Dallas area will hit the spot.

Kuby's Sausage House

Located uptown, Kuby's brings authentic German food to Dallas. A family-owned business that began in Germany in 1728, Kuby's came to Dallas in 1961. It operates as both a restaurant and a grocery, with a delicatessen and bakery. The grocery sells fine imported items from Europe. In the bakery, homemade European sweets and breads are sold. Fresh meats, sausages and gourmet cheeses are available in the delicatessen. Restaurant favorites include Oma's Kartoffel Pfannkuchen, potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream, and the Wurst teller, a dish of various sausages. Children are welcome in this casual atmosphere. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, Sunday brunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday. Dinner specials change every month, and live entertainment is provided. A selection of imported beer is available.

Henk's European Deli and Black Forest Bakery

Henk's European Deli and Black Forest Bakery is located in northeast Dallas. It is open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday, brunch on Sunday and dinner Friday and Saturday. The menu includes an extensive list of German sausages and meats. Weiner schnitzel and grilled bratwurst are popular dishes. Sides like German potato salad and spaetzle accompany entrees. Daily soups are made from scratch. There is a beer and wine list. Cakes are baked daily, and favorites include the Black Forest and the Swiss Madrisa. Most everything on the restaurant menu is available in the deli or bakery, for patrons to enjoy at home. Henk's offers catering and wedding cake service.

Bavarian Grill

Located about 10 miles outside Dallas, the Bavarian Grill has been serving traditional German food since 1993. In 2009 it was voted Best German Restaurant in America by GermanDeli.com, because of its ability to provide a true ethnic experience. Menu favorites include the Jäger Schnitzel and the Schweins Haxe, slow-roasted ham hock. The dessert menu is extensive, with specialties like Munich Royal Regents cake and traditional Black Forest cake. Servers are all dressed in festive Bavarian costume. Live oompah music is played almost every night. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, with a "stein hour" from 4 to 7 p.m. There are 20 German beers on tap and a selection of wine. Repeat guests can be recruited into the "stein club" if they try every type of beer. Various festivals are celebrated with seasonal specialties. Guest can enjoy the outdoor beergarden when weather permits. The Bavarian Grill is closed Sunday and Monday.
