If you find yourself in Kenai, a three-hour drive or half-hour flight southwest of Anchorage, you more than likely want to try your hand at the famed salmon fishing here at the junction of the Kenai River and Cook Inlet. You can also raft, hike, kayak and view abundant wildlife in the nearby Kenai National Wildlife refuge and the Captain Cook State Recreation Area. The visitors' center can set you up with a walking tour to see Fort Kenay, a historic Russian Orthodox Church and Beluga Whale Lookout. Located in the center of town, the Uptown aims to please visiting anglers by providing freezer space for salmon catches. This 50-room motel with cable TV offers free transportation to and from the airport. You can eat on-site at Louie's Restaurant, which prepares salmon, steamer clams, halibut, king crab and other dishes, both seafood and non-seafood. Room amenities include a coffee pot, hair dryer, mini-fridge and microwave. Guests can request a crib or an ironing board.

Kenai Extended Stay Suites

If you're looking for cooking facilities for an extended stay, the 78 suites at the three-story Kenai Extended Stay Suites may fit the bill. The hotel opened in 2008 about one half-mile from the airport and features free wireless Internet and kitchenettes with microwave, fridge, two-burner cook-top, toaster and coffee maker. The hotel also offers a fitness center and guest laundry. Guests receive Alaska Airlines miles.

Kenai Landing

This century-old converted salmon cannery provides regular rooms, restored historic rooms and the on-site Sockeyes restaurant. Historic rooms feature a sink and TV/DVD player and shared restrooms. More modern rooms include private baths, a TV/DVD player and a deck overlooking the river. You'll drive around to the mouth of the Kenai River across from the main part of town to get to Kenai Landing. This destination also focuses on tours and activities and can set up river guides, fishing packages, fish processing and box lunches. If you drive up with your boat on a trailer, take advantage of the landing's boat launch and RV parking spaces. You can also take a float plane across Cook Inlet to the Alaska Peninsula to see stupendous grizzly viewing.
